    The League of Women Voters of Kentucky held its biennial convention at Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill this weekend, April 10-11, 2015.  Members heard about expanding domestic violence and House Bill 8, the ‘dating violence’ bill from a panel including Senator Whitney Westerfield, (R ) Christian County, chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Gretchen Hunt, Staff Attorney with the KY Association of Sexual Assault Programs and Neil Ward, Bell County Attorney.

     

     Members also heard from Melissa Currence, League member in Cincinnati and former co-chair of the LWVUS Young People Task Force. Ms. Currence spoke about Building the League of the Future.

    The League of Women Voters of Lexington is scheduled to attend a Naturalization Ceremony on Friday, March 20 in the Mitchell Fine Arts Building, Transylvania University, 300 North Broadway, in order to help newly sworn-in citizens register to vote. 


    Approximately 200 petitioners are expected to take the official oath of citizenship, administered by The Honorable Karen K. Caldwell, Chief Judge, U.S. District Court for Eastern Kentucky. 


    Each new citizen is immediately eligible to register to vote.  League volunteers will be on site to assist with voter registration, provide additional educational materials and answer questions of first-time voters in the Eastern Kentucky district. 

     

    Petitioners will begin to file into the Mitchell Fine Arts Center around 11:30 a.m.  The court session will be opened by Judge Caldwell at noon 


    The League of Women Voters has a long tradition of engaging new voters and assisting them in voter registration. The League has registered new citizens at naturalization ceremonies for many years.

    Join us Saturday, March 7, at 10:00 a.m. at the Kentucky Theater when One World Films will show a new documentary produced by the Teaching Tolerance Program of the Southern Poverty Law Center, SELMA: THE BRIDGE TO THE BALLOT. This documentary reviews the Civil Rights march from Selma to Montgomery. March 7 is the 50th anniversary of that march. It is a 40 min. doc. and all OWF are free and open to the public.

    Plan now to join all your League friends on Wednesday, February 25, to observe “Democracy in Action.” 


    The planned schedule for the day is: 

    9:00 to 9:30 a.m.—Register with Terry Naydan and Nita Smith in the Capitol Annex cafeteria. 

    9:30 to 10:00 a.m.—The legislative team will present an overview of the bills we are supporting or opposing. 

    10:00 to 12 noon—Observe a committee meeting or meet with legislators. 

    ALSO AT NOON—A Domestic Violence Rally will take place at the Capitol. Members who want to observe or join in can join other LWV members in the cafeteria for lunch after the rally. 

    12:10 to 1:30 p.m.—Lunch together in the cafeteria. Everyone buys her/his own lunch. We invite legislators to speak to us informally about bills. 

    2:00 p.m.—League members observe a session of the House or Senate.
