Book signing at the Frazier Museum (Louisville): “The Great Dissenter: John Marshall Harlan” by Peter S. Canellos

LET’S TALK | Bridging the Divide: “The Great Dissenter: John Marshall Harlan”

Book Signing, 11:30 a.m.

Program in the Frazier Loft, Noon – 1 p.m.

He was known as the Great Dissenter on the U.S. Supreme Court, due to his many dissents in cases restricting civil liberties. Kentuckian John Marshall Harlan served 33 years on the high court from the end of the Civil War through the Gilded Age. In his famous dissent in Plessy v. Ferguson, he wrote, “the constitution is colorblind and neither knows nor tolerates classes among citizens.” Best-selling author Peter S. Canellos joins us to discuss his new book, The Great Dissenter: The Story of John Marshall Harlan, America’s Judicial Hero. Hear how the views of Harlan, who during his lifetime was often derided as a loner and a loser, ultimately helped shape U.S. citizens’ civil rights. We’ll explore what caused Harlan to see things differently and whether it was because of someone whom many believed to be his half-brother. Join us August 24 at noon, either on Zoom or in person at the Frazier, for this lunch and learn.

This program is hosted in partnership with the University of Louisville Brandeis School of Law and the Louisville Bar Association (LBA). A donation of $10 will provide you with the Zoom link, while a donation of $25 gets you in-person access with a boxed lunch at the Frazier. Books are on sale at the Frazier, and author Peter S. Canellos will sign copies before the program at 11:30 a.m.
